Workflow & Tools

From the first upload to a finished design foundation.

Four clear steps structure your competition kickoff — and each tool has exactly one job. Here's the process in detail.

The Process

Four steps, one common thread.

01

Upload sources

One competition, one project. All of the organizer's documents sit in one place and are read automatically.

  1. ACompetition brief — The brief is the central source. Right after upload, BASIO detects site, address and competition building plots and pre-fills the analysis — correctable at any time.
  2. BOther sources — Plans, PDFs, images and web links, such as the zoning plan, site plan or room schedule. Each source is analyzed individually and stays linked to its references.
02

Analysis

The path from documents to a reliable basis — in a fixed sequence, so that the maximum building envelope is derived correctly.

  1. A
    Site & plot
    • A.1Confirm the site location on the map.
    • A.2Position the site plan on the aerial image, capture plot boundary and building plots, set north orientation, optionally import existing buildings.

For each building plot you can specify whether the boundary is a property line or already a building window from the brief.

  2. B
    Requirements & constraints
    • B.1All requirements of the brief are extracted and structured: submission & format, plans & scales, planning-relevant specifications.
    • B.2Legal sources from state to municipality are identified automatically once the location is confirmed; from the zoning plan, bylaws and building code BASIO extracts the constraints — site coverage, density, heights, storeys, setbacks — each with derivation and reference. The constraints register compares the legal situation with the brief: the legal situation is the cap, a stricter brief value applies automatically, a more lenient one surfaces as a conflict and is decided deliberately. Missing values can be added as a flagged assumption. One click approves the constraints — only then do they bind concept and reports.
  3. CGenerate analysis — The architectural analysis in 11 topics: brief, legal situation, context, urban design, open space, program, access, sustainability, economics, construction and jury logic — each with opportunities, risks, design implications and open questions.
  4. Events & deadlines — Competition deadlines and events are detected in the brief and added to the Outlook calendar with a reminder.

For site, land registry and surroundings, BASIO uses freely available official and open geodata (including basemap.de/BKG, basemap.at, swisstopo, state land registries, OpenStreetMap). Sources are displayed within the application; the data is for orientation and does not replace official extracts.

03

Concept

From the verified basis, the first design approach emerges — spatial, traceable, directly editable.

  1. ASite model — The 3D viewer shows site plan, plot, existing buildings and the maximum building envelope derived from setbacks and permitted height. Dimension chains per boundary edge and height can be adjusted by double-click; deviations from the legal value are flagged. The key figures — plot area, storeys, height, setback, buildable area, GFA, cubature — are traceable to their source reference.
  2. BConcept — Choose direction, roof form and focus; BASIO develops concept ideas with narrative, spatial strategy, design principles, strengths, risks and jury argument. The volume is created as 3D massing within the building envelope on the site plan and can be edited directly — site coverage, density and height are checked live against the constraints. Export as GLB/OBJ for CAD.
  3. CDrawings — Plan view and perspective are generated from the model and exported.
04

Export reports

Four PDFs at the push of a button:

  • Requirements
  • Analysis
  • Concept
  • Team briefing

Plus a site-basis PDF with location, cadastre, building plots, building envelope and the comparison of brief and legal situation.

Ready to design

The foundation is set — now the real creative work begins.
You design, BASIO has prepared the ground.

Visualizations

A standalone pictogram tool for massing, circulation, and concept diagrams. Also generate visualizations from concept ideas or your own prompts — with reference images for targeted results. Mark favorites and export them directly for your competition boards. AI-generated images are labeled accordingly within the application.

BASIO-GPT

The project-aware AI chat knows every document you've uploaded. Ask questions and clarify connections without scrolling through hundreds of pages yourself.

The Tools

Each tool has exactly one job.

Seven building blocks that together form a solid design foundation.

Source upload

Bundle briefs, plans, PDFs and images centrally — one project archive instead of scattered sources.

Extract requirements

Sources are analyzed and relevant requirements captured in a structured way — checkable and complete.

Generate analysis

A clear, traceable foundation for the whole team — everyone works from the same status.

Export reports

Requirements list, analysis report and concept foundation as a clean export — in minutes.

Concept

Derive initial conceptual approaches and spatial structures from the analysis.

BASIO-GPT

Query information directly and understand the content of your documents faster.

Concept visualization

Create initial visualizations over the course of the design — make ideas visible instantly.

Timeline & deadlines

Deadlines from the brief land automatically in Outlook, and the team is notified via Teams.

Microsoft Teams & Outlook

Never miss a deadline again.

Meetings and tasks sort themselves — straight from the brief into calendar and team.
